The downside? You have to ride a train…

What do you get when you couple a ride on Amtrak and a free $100 drink coupon? An excrutiating long and drunk trip from Chicago to LA on America’s railways.

In an effort to promote Amtrak’s new high-end sleep car service, the company will be offering a free $100 drink coupon to those that shell out $789 or more for a ticket. At around $7 for top shelf liquor, that’s 14 cocktails over a two to three day period. Now what’s the catch? Well, for one, you’re on a train for two to three days! Two, you have to be a member of Amtrak’s Guest Rewards program. And finally, you need to travel between November and January (exactly the season I want to travel via train).

I’m interested to see how this promotion turns out. I don’t know about you, but you couldn’t give me $1,000 in free booze to ride a train across country. $1,000? Well, on second thought…
